Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which is better for an Indian business?

Google Ads catch people already searching; Meta Ads reach people before they search. How to tell which suits your business, the default settings that waste money on each, and the GST, billing and account details to sort out first.

Journal cover: Google Ads vs Meta Ads, which is better for an Indian business

Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which is better? Neither wins in general. Google Ads is better when customers already search for what you sell, such as "AC repair Andheri" or "CA for GST registration", while Meta Ads on Instagram and Facebook are better when your product sells by being seen, or when nobody knows to search for it yet.

The fair test is cost per customer, not cost per click, and that depends on your business rather than on a benchmark table. This guide shows how to tell which platform suits you, the default settings that quietly waste money on each, and the GST, billing and ownership details Indian owners should sort out before the first campaign.

How do Google Ads and Meta Ads decide who sees your ad?

On Google, a person types what they want and your ad competes to appear with the search results, on Maps or on YouTube. For Search ads you usually pay when someone clicks. Google ranks ads by Ad Rank, which weighs your bid against the quality of your ad and landing page, and its help says higher-quality ads often pay less per click. So a clear ad for "pest control Malad" that leads to a page about exactly that can beat a rival who simply bids more.

On Instagram and Facebook, nobody is searching for you. Meta shows your ad to people its system predicts will respond, and for most campaigns you are charged for impressions (each time the ad is shown) rather than clicks. Its auction picks the ad with the highest "total value", a mix of your bid, how likely that person is to act and the ad's quality. That is why, on Meta, the photo or Reel itself does much of the targeting work.

Which one suits your type of business?

If you fit two rows, start with the platform closest to the sale, which usually means Google for services and Meta for products. Add the second platform once the first pays for itself.

How can you check before spending anything?

  1. Is anyone searching? Google's Keyword Planner, inside any Google Ads account, is free to use once you add billing details. It shows roughly how many people search a phrase each month in a chosen city, and the range advertisers have paid to appear at the top. If hardly anyone searches "handmade soy candles", Google can't send you many buyers, however good the ads are.
  2. What are competitors running? Google's Ads Transparency Center lets anyone look up an advertiser or website and see the ads it has shown, by country and date, and Meta's Ad Library shows the ads currently running on Facebook and Instagram. If several rivals keep advertising on your main searches, there is usually money in them. If your category is full of Reels ads, your competitors are betting on Meta.
  3. What can you afford per enquiry? Take the profit on a typical first order, or on a year of a regular customer, and multiply it by the share of enquiries that usually become customers. If one enquiry in four becomes a customer, you can afford up to a quarter of a customer's profit for each enquiry. Measure both platforms against that number, not against each other's click prices.

Which default settings waste money?

On Google Ads

  • Location: by default, Google shows ads to people in your area and to people elsewhere who have shown interest in it. Google's help on location options suggests "Presence" when you only want people who are in, or regularly in, your locations. A clinic in Borivali gains nothing from a click in Delhi.
  • Networks: new Search campaigns include Google's search partner sites by default, and the setup also offers a Display Network box that spends Search budget on other websites. Google's own help warns that some partner clicks may not be well targeted, so start on Google Search alone and test the rest once you can measure leads.
  • Search terms: every week at first, open the search terms report and add negative keywords such as "jobs", "course", "free" or "salary", so searches like "AC repair course" stop using your budget.
  • Your Business Profile: link it as a location asset so your ads can show your address, distance and a call button. Make sure it is accurate first; our Google Business Profile checklist covers the details.

On Meta Ads

  • Objective: Meta looks for people likely to take the action you choose, so a Traffic campaign finds people who click, not necessarily people who enquire. For enquiries, choose Leads, which can collect a form, a call or a WhatsApp chat, or Sales if you sell online.
  • Lead forms: Meta's instant forms default to "More volume", built for quick submission. The "Higher intent" type adds a review screen where people confirm their details, which Meta suggests when every lead needs a follow-up (it runs only in mobile feeds). Add one qualifying question, such as locality, and call back the same day.

On both: a daily budget is not a daily cap

Google's budget help says it can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, but not more than 30.4 times it in a month. Meta's help on daily budgets says it can spend up to 75% more on a good day, but not more than seven times the daily budget in a Sunday-to-Saturday week. So judge spend by the month or the week; a heavy Monday is not a billing error.

What should Indian businesses set up before the first campaign?

  • Accounts in your own name. Create the Google Ads account and the Meta business portfolio yourself, keep admin access on Google and full control on Meta, and give your agency access: on Google by linking its manager account, on Meta by adding it as a partner. On Google only an admin can add users or unlink a manager account, and a partner on Meta can't pass your assets to another business. If you part ways, the account history, audiences and tracking stay with you.
  • Your GSTIN on both invoices. If Google India bills your account, GST is added, and Google's GST payments help says that without your GSTIN in the payments profile it won't appear on invoices and you may not be able to claim credit for the tax. Meta's help says ads for accounts with India as the business country are sold by Meta India with GST, and asks registered businesses to add their GSTIN to claim input tax credit. Ask your CA whether you also need to deduct TDS on these payments.
  • Prepaid balances. If your account is prepaid (Google calls it manual payments, Meta calls it available funds), ads stop when the balance runs out, and bank transfers can take a few days to show. Top up before a Diwali or wedding-season push, not on the day.
  • WhatsApp and tracking. Meta's ads that click to WhatsApp open a chat with you straight from Instagram or Facebook. Google's message assets can do the same from a search ad, but only for verified advertisers in eligible industries. Count those chats and calls as leads, ask every new enquiry where they found you, and set up conversion tracking as described in our guide to social media management vs paid ads.

Key takeaways

  • Google catches people already searching; Meta reaches people before they search.
  • Compare both on cost per enquiry or sale against what a customer is worth, not on cost per click.
  • Check demand in Keyword Planner and rivals in the Ads Transparency Center and Meta Ad Library before you spend.
  • For a local business, switch Google to "Presence" and Search only at first; on Meta, use the Leads objective and higher-intent forms.
  • Keep the accounts in your name, add your GSTIN and top up prepaid balances before busy seasons.

FAQs

Is Meta cheaper than Google Ads?

Per click, Meta is often cheaper than a competitive Google search, but the person scrolling Reels is usually further from buying than someone who has just searched "dentist near me". What matters is the cost of an enquiry that becomes a customer. Set one target from your own numbers, run each platform against it and let the results decide, rather than click prices.

How much should I spend to test?

There is no single right figure, but the budget must buy enough results to learn from. Meta says an ad set settles after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and edits during that learning phase reset it. So multiply the cost per enquiry you can afford by the results you need, and if that is more than you can spend, test one platform, one service and one area first.

Can I advertise without a website?

On Meta, yes: ads can open a WhatsApp chat or an instant form, so you can start without one. Google Search ads send people to a web page, and Google's Ad Rank weighs that page's quality, so a slow or vague page can raise what you pay. A page for each service that answers the search beats sending everyone to your home page.

Should I run both from the start?

Usually not. A small budget split across two platforms gives each too little data to learn from, so prove one first. Then add the second where it helps most: Instagram ads shown to people who visited your website, or Google ads on your own business name once Meta has people searching for you.

If you would rather have this set up properly, we run both through our Google and Meta ads service, with the accounts in your name and ad spend paid straight to Google or Meta, separate from our fee. Nobody can promise results from ads, but we can tell you which platform suits your business first. Tell us what you sell and where, and after a short call we'll suggest a starting plan and send a fixed written quote.
